Anzac Cummings
founder: A. Cummings & Co.

In 1948, Anzac Cummings at the age of 24 years of age, with a bicycle for transport and 200 pounds in his pocket decided to go into business. Because he was a racing cyclist, he was aware of a need for a cycle shop in the Ballina district. Although the business started out as a cycle shop, it was only four months later that he introduced electrical goods.

Times and technology have moved in quantum leaps since Anzac first started stocking radios and other electrical items in his bicycle sales and repair shop. It was the early days of Ballina’s growth and he had seen there
was a need for these goods to be more readily available for customers.

Anzac is still active in the Cummings operations in Ballina, Lismore, Grafton and Yamba. A Cummings & Co would be one of the oldest electrical firms in Australia.

Anzac Cummings and his wife Nola, along with their four children Elton, Clem, Fran and Rodney, are all actively involved with the running of the businesses which service customers from the Gold Coast to Northern Rivers of NSW in their bricks and mortar shops and Australia-wide from the on-line store.

Anzac Cummings’ vision hasn’t dimmed over the years and is now perpetuated by his children. Cummings policy is to have a family member regularly at all of the stores.

Anzac believes that family involvement gives Cummings a unique advantage which large corporate-owned organizations cannot match.

With quick access to the owners, decisions that go beyond the responsibilities of Cummings store managers can be made quickly and paths of action can be implemented.

Anzac Cummings feels that Cummings has developed into an industry leader.

Our reputation as a specialist electrical products company has grown over the past 55 years.

Cummings’ objectives state that “all knowledge is power” and that all employees should be familiar with the basic principals and structures of our products and resources.

The Cummings family also has a policy of reinvesting in the local community, through support of local charities and service organizations, in property, staff and the use of local trades people and sub contractors in the daily electrical business.

Community Involvement

Cummings has a long history of community involvement starting with Anzac Cummings who has been involved in numerous community organizations, including servicing as a Councillor with the Ballina Shire Council, President of the Ballina RSL Club and has been a member of Legacy for forty five years.

Racing is another one of Anzacs passions he was President and Secretary of the Ballina Jockey Club for many years and is also a Life Members of the Club. Each year Cummings sponsors a race day that draws a large crowd to the course.

A.Cummings & Co. CEO Elton Cummings has a long association with Surf Lifesaving and was a driving force in the operations of the Ballina Jet Rescue Boat. Elton was also the founder of the helicopter rescue service in the area that is now known as the Northern Region Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
